Peripheral Vascular DiseasePeripheral Vascular Disease (PVD) -- also known as peripheral arterial disease -- is a partial or complete blockage of the circulation of blood through the arteries to a person's limbs and vital organs such as the brain, kidneys, and intestines. At Midwest Cardiology, we've been diagnosing and treating peripheral vascular disorders since the 1980s. Our highly skilled and experienced physicians utilize our state-of-the-art facilities to provide comprehensive vascular care for our patients with PVD. The same atherosclerotic process that causes heart artery blockages causes PVD as well. Just as coronary artery disease increases the risk of a heart attack, PVD increases a person's risk for other serious health conditions, such as stroke, disabling leg pain, gangrene, and hypertension. In fact, patients with PVD also have a much higher likelihood of having a heart attack than does the general public. That's why at Midwest Cardiology Associates, we evaluate all aspects of your circulatory system with tests that include the latest non-invasive imaging tests performed in our fully certified labs. It is essential to integrate all the levels of care -- physical examination, non-invasive testing, angiographic analysis, and therapy. At Midwest Cardiology, we take the least invasive approach possible to treat your PVD. Typically that means we begin your treatment with medications and lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise. If this approach doesn't produce the necessary results, we then investigate more invasive techniques, such as angiography, angioplasty, atherectomy, and stent procedures. Surgery if often unnecessary and unlike many open surgical procedures, these less invasive procedures can be performed without general anesthesia or large incisions. The advantages of minimally invasive procedures include smaller wounds, less pain, faster healing times, and lower infection risk. At MCA, we can provide the following procedures:
